Theatre History

Since 1864, there has been a theatre under the arches at Charing Cross Station. Known throughout the years by several names – Gattis-in-the-Arches, the Players Theatre, and the New Players Theatre – the theatre was rechristened the Charing Cross Theatre in January 2011 to mark the change in its ownership and the new era on which it was embarking.

Although the Music Hall tradition is still honoured with periodic Sunday performances, the Charing Cross Theatre has operated as a legitimate commercial venue since 2002. The current management is committed to presenting affordable theatrical productions of the highest standards, while maintaining a collaborative atmosphere where seasoned professionals can work with emerging young talent. 

Recent productions include: Beauty & The Beast; Get Down Tonight; The Daughter of Time; Janie Dee’s Beautiful World Cabaret; Stiletto; Mrs President; Jack & The Beanstalk; Tattooer; One Small Step; The Fabulist; Marie Curie; Bronco Billy; Sleeping Beauty Takes A Prick; the English language premier of Rebecca; Glory Ride; George Takei’s Allegiance; Francis Poulenc and Jean Cocteau’s The Human Voice; From Here to Eternity; The Milk Train Doesn’t Stop Here Anymore; Donizetti’s Rita; the London premiere of Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike; Pippin; the Offie Award-winning productions of Queen Of The Mist and Amour; the UK premiere of Violet; Mythic; Harold And Maude; the first London revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Woman In White; The Knowledge; Yank!; The Braille Legacy; Death Takes A Holiday; Ragtime (Offie Award winner – Best Musical); Titanic; In The Bar Of A Tokyo Hotel; and the UK premiere of Jerry Herman’s Dear World starring Betty Buckley, directed by Gillian Lynne.
